“Between the Senses and Technology—What is Immersion in VR?”

In the latest episode of our podcast “Innovators,” I discuss how VR technology can engage our senses in ways previously reserved only for the physical world around us. However, that has changed. The digital world now opens up to us in a new, extraordinary way.

Key topics covered in the podcast:

  • The definition and understanding of immersion in the context of VR.
  • The role of the senses in perceiving virtual environments.
  • The role of haptics in increasing the realism of VR experiences.
  • The future of VR and its impact on daily life and business, with virtual meetings as an example.

Of course, I encourage you to listen to the full audio version of our podcast to dive deeper into the topic of VR immersion and understand how this technology is transforming our approach to the digital world.

What is immersion?

I define immersion as the process in which VR technology engages multiple senses simultaneously, allowing for deep immersion in the digital world. Immersion is not limited to sight but also includes hearing, movement, and even, in certain applications, touch and smell. This makes users feel like they are part of the virtual reality, enhancing realism and emotional engagement in interactions with the digital world. With the dynamic development of this technology, VR users can move around virtual spaces and “grab digital objects” just as they would in the real world.

💎 Top 5 insights from the podcast:

  1. Immersion in VR is not just about visualization but a comprehensive sensory experience.
  2. The development of haptics, or touch technology, will significantly impact the realism of VR experiences.
  3. VR technology has the potential to revolutionize how we work (and where we work) through virtual meetings.
  4. Can you meet in VR? Yes! VR enables remote meetings and collaboration, bringing people together in the same virtual space.
  5. There are still technological and economic challenges ahead to fully integrate VR into daily life.

I imagine a world where sensory experiences in the digital and physical worlds are indistinguishable. VR/AR technology can bring us closer to that point, transforming how we learn, work, and communicate. This is an exciting prospect that can improve our lives. You can contribute to this transformation by implementing a project using virtual technology in your companies. 👋 Let’s create an innovative project together!
